Creating the perfect CV
In a world by where it is becoming fiercely competitive within the job market, you are probably having feelings of trepidation if currently seeking a new job opportunity. Why not utilise this time to give your CV an overhaul.
Below are a few tips to help when creating your fresh and shiny new Curriculum Vitae.
Must haves on your CV
Name, contact number, location, LinkedIn profile
A professional email address
A personal statement (max five sentences)
Your career; job titles, companies, dates, details of your achievements
Education, qualifications, professional training
Things to think about when updating or creating your CV
Your own personal QR code
Did you know everyone has their own person QR code on their LinkedIn profile?
Why not include yours on your CV to allow prospective employees to quickly find you.
You can find yours by going to your LinkedIn app and clicking the QR symbol to the right of the search box.
Formatting
Keep it professional when thinking about fonts and colours.
Make it clear, concise and easy to read.
Highlight your most recent position first.
Include your achievements, not your general tasks.
The ideal maximum CV length is two pages.
Save a word and PDF version - check the formatting and view how it looks when printed.
Sell yourself
What is your USP? Include quantifiable evidence of role successes i.e. targets obtained, turnover achieved, cost saving exercises, employee of the month, mystery shopper results, all of which will help to demonstrate your strengths and ability.
Remember you want to be perceived as an asset to any company, what can you offer that the other applicants can’t.
Never lie
Check your LinkedIn matches what you have put on your CV.
Have any of your achievements been documented online? Perhaps there was an article on an event you organised, you might have been mentioned in a review from a customer on a companies website. Add a hyperlink for employers to see.
The details
Tailor your CV in line with each job role application.
Emphasise any key skills/experience which are relevant to that position and that you can demonstrate.
Break up text to make it reader friendly-bullet points are a great way to assist with this!
Without wanting to state the obvious, do check your spelling and grammar throughout. There is nothing more unprofessional than a CV laden with errors. Spell check and Grammarly will become your best friend.
Ask a friend to proof read it.
Today’s world
If applicable, do highlight any positive outcomes from the current working situation that you may have encountered. For example, allowing you to re-focus, have a positive mindset or simply having the ability to be flexible and adapt in a positive manner.
Do not feel pressured to have achieved that new accounting qualification or yoga instructor course during recent months. Maintaining a focused and positive mindset is just as important!
And remember, as tough as it may feel at the moment, never give up. Perseverance is key during these times.
